But there was one thing that was a major standout and basically ruined the shooting experience for me… The Viewfinder This camera really does have a lot going for it: Excellent optics, solid build, stunning looks, and great ergonomics.

That being said, I would be nervous using the G1 for any type of subject or image where there was movement, or if speed was important. Often I’m focusing on a subject far away, usually at infinity, or on a static subject in the foreground, and then recomposing. The system worked great for me with zero out-of-focus shots, but with the type of images I’m creating, I didn’t expect to have any issues. You often hear mixed reviews, with some people claiming to have had multiple missed shots per roll, and others having no issues at all. One of the big knocks with this camera is the autofocus system. Other than that though, the exposures were great, and the camera’s built-in light meter seemed to do a fine job.

One minor annoyance though, is that the dial doesn’t lock, and there were a few times where I looked down and saw that it had been bumped to either plus two or minus two. I used the camera in the ‘Auto’ mode, which is aperture priority, and I also used the exposure compensation set to plus one. You can get the original G1 with the 28mm, which is the combo that I tested, for around $500 USD on eBay, which is an incredible deal when you take into account the quality of the glass. If you’re not interested in those last three, then your best bet is to pick up the non-green label version as it will be the most affordable. Not the 21mm, 35mm, and 35-70mm that were released later. So, the original G1 can only accept the 16mm, 28mm, 45mm, and 90mm.

There’s also a green label G1 version which was the exact same as the original, except it was modified so that it could use the full lens lineup.

The G2 had some minor design and technical changes, but the most significant upgrade was an improved autofocus system, and also compatibility with some of the newer G lenses.

These were marketed as premium cameras, with the G1 and 45mm combo costing the equivalent of almost $4000 USD in today’s dollars. The Contax G1 was released in 1994, and the G2 in 1996. Before we jump into things, let’s take a quick look at the history of the G system:
